Resources
Following is a listing of some resources that may be of help to you in learning more about diabetes. While this list is nowhere near complete, it gives an overview of the types of resources available. Finding even more information is as simple as logging on to the Internet.
To find Web sites, just go to your favorite search engine and type in "diabetes" and "children" or other key words. To find books, log onto an online bookseller and do a similar search. You'll come up with dozens of resources!
Advocacy
The American Diabetes Association is the only organization that works to help families of youth with diabetes fight school discrimination. We also advocate for increased federal funding of diabetes research and medical insurance coverage, and we help youth learn how to help themselves through advocacy.
Books & Resources
The American Diabetes Association publishes new books every year to help families living with diabetes. Like 487 Really Cool Tips for Kids with Diabetes. This book was written by two brothers with diabetes, and is jam-packed with tips on everything from playing sports to counting carbs, from dealing with hormones, to checking blood glucose.
Diabetes Camp
We are committed to outdoor recreational activities for children including day and resident camps and retreat events. The ADA is the largest provider of these events in the world.
Family Resource Network
No one should have to fight diabetes alone -- especially your child and and you. Trained parent volunteers are ready to help you through the day to day challenges of diabetes with information and support.
Homefront Mini-Magazine
The Homefront features fun and informative articles relevant to families of children with diabetes. Previous issues have included an interview with Elliott Yamin, a feature on how to transition to college to and success stories in school advocacy. National Youth Advocate
Meet Chris Stokes, the American Diabetes Association's 2009 National Youth Advocate, and learn how your child can get involved.
Parents' Enewsletter
The Parents E-newsletter provides practical tips for diabetes management and healthy recipes as well as updates on the latest research, legislation and advocacy efforts. The Parents’ E-newsletter also features updates on ADA people and programs as well. Sign up and receive the Parents’ E-newsletter twice a month!
Print-On-Demand (PODs)
Our PODs provide detailed information on specific topics, from type 2 diabetes in youth to an overview of insulin delivery devices.
Research for a Cure
The ADA continues to fund research to find a cure for diabetes and to improve the lives of people with diabetes. The projects we support cover the spectrum from islet cell biology and transplantation techniques to studies in diabetes education and treatment. And we are quickly increasing our support for research, providing $36.5 million in 2004 and $40 million in 2005.
School Walk for Diabetes
School Walk for Diabetes is an educational school fund-raising program that promotes community service, school spirit, and healthy living to students. Participants learn about diabetes and diabetes prevention while raising money to fund diabetes research, information, and advocacy. Bring this wonderful program to your child's school!
Wizdom® Kit
The Wizdom Kit is a kit for families of a child newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Each kit includes two booklets - one for the child and one for the parent. Each book outlines everything you need to know to get started "juggling" diabetes -- that is, juggling food, insulin, and exercise.
Planet D
Planet D is a place where kids with diabetes can explore more about diabetes, discover new things about themselves and connect with others who are also living with diabetes.
